Packing and Shipping Tips for Parts Restoration

Below are our recommendations and tips for packing and shipping your parts to us for restoration. Use your own judgement, but keep in mind insurance claims processes with any carrier can be time consuming and are never a guarantee. Trust us, your Corvette parts are worth the extra effort to wrap and package them securely!

Please note, these are only suggestions to help your parts reach us safely. Corvette Specialties of MD, Inc. is not responsible for any damage that occurs during shipment of parts to us for restoration, regardless of the packing or shipping methods used.

Please note our facility is closed to the public. If you would like to drop off your parts for restoration, please contact us to schedule a drop-off appointment. We cannot accept in-person drop offs without an appointment.

  • GENERAL TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS
    • Ship only the items to be repaired/restored.
    • Wrap each item with bubble wrap individually.
      • Pro Tip: After wrapping your items with bubble wrap, secure them further by wrapping each bundle with plastic wrap.
    • Be sure to fill your shipping boxes completely with cushioning material, especially the corners, as any movement within the box can cause damage. You don’t want your parts to move or slide inside the box. {image}
    • We advise against using air-filled bags as cushioning. They always shift and allow too much movement within the package. Newspaper, kraft paper, and additional bubble wrap make excellent cushioning material when packed tightly.
      • Pro Tip: A good rule of thumb is to pack shipping boxes so the contents can survive a 6-foot drop.
    • Insure your items for a replacement value you’re comfortable with.
      • Did you know? Carriers can deny your insurance claim if they determine the package was not packed/cushioned properly.

        Speedometer and Tachometer damaged in shipment.

        Protect your faces when shipping individual gauges!

  • SPEEDOMETERS, TACHOMETERS, & CLOCKS
    • We recommend wrapping each item with bubble wrap individually.
    • When shipping open-face gauges without a lens covering, protect the gauge face by taping the gauge face-down to a piece of cardboard. We recommend using automotive tape or painter’s tape as it typically removes easily without affecting paint or finish.
      • Some pointer bases may stick up beyond the edge of the face, so the cardboard may need to have a hole cut out to accommodate it.
    • 1968-1969 Speed-Warning Speedometers Important Note: You must leave your 68-69 speed-warning Speedometer installed in its complete housing (including backplate, bezels, & lens) when sending for restoration/repair. They are extremely fragile and shipping them open-faced often causes damage to the very hard to find parts.
  • SMALL GAUGES
    • We recommend wrapping each item with bubble wrap individually.
    • 1953-1962 small gauges, please leave the gauges in their housings/pods. Gauges need to be installed in their housings during final calibration.
    • 1963-1967 small gauges, protect the gauge face(s) by taping them face-down to a piece of cardboard. We recommend using automotive tape or painter’s tape as it typically removes easily without affecting paint or finish.

      Cracked C2 gauge cluster

      C2 cluster damaged in shipment. Don’t let this happen to yours!

  • DASH GAUGE CLUSTERS
    • We recommend wrapping the entire cluster with bubble wrap.
    • Cushion and support the lower corners of your gauge cluster, especially if you are not including a headlight motor switch. The lower corners tend to be the weakest and are where most shipping damage occurs. {image} {image} {image} This is especially important for 1963 gauge clusters, as they tend to get damaged the most. We don’t know why.
  • WIPER MOTORS & HEADLIGHT MOTORS
    • We recommend wrapping each motor with bubble wrap completely.
    • Protect headlight motor sockets. They can get damaged if they collide within the box. {image}
  • GLOVE BOX DOORS & ASSEMBLIES
    • For individual doors, we recommend placing a piece of cardboard on either side of the glove box door and wrapping completely with bubble wrap.
    • For full glove box assemblies, we recommend supporting the interior with cushioning material and securing the door closed.
      • If your felt/cardboard “box” is not reusable, you can save shipping costs by not including it. We have quality reproduction replacements, and the original is not required unless you specifically request it to be reused.
      • Be sure to include the lower glove box support. It is necessary if you want us to reassemble your glove box assembly!
  • SHIFT CONSOLES
    • We recommend placing a piece of supportive cardboard on either side of the console and wrapping completely with bubble wrap.

We hope these packing & shipping tips for your restoration parts are helpful. We look forward to taking care of your parts like they were our own!
